Emergency DispatcherSalary: $20.18 HourlyLocation: 100 East 1st Street, Edmond, OKJob Type: Full-TimeDepartment: Emergency Communications—Dispatch CenterClosing Date: ContinuousJob DescriptionAs an Emergency Dispatcher, you will make a difference every day. You help people during moments of urgent need and impact how well the police, fire, and after-hour emergency maintenance personnel perform their jobs. You are an important part of the public safety team that protects the lives & property of Edmond's residents.Duties of a dispatcher involve receiving, prioritizing, and dispatching both emergency and non-emergency telephone calls. During these calls, dispatchers aid emergency callers, help them establish composure, obtain essential information from the caller, and dispatch the appropriate emergency personnel.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED equivalent7 to 11 months of related experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experienceValid Oklahoma Driver's License and a driving record acceptable to the City's insurance carrierNecessary SkillsAvailability and willingness to work any shift schedule (new hires are required to work all shifts during training, which can last up to 8 months or longer):Day shift: 6 am - 2 pmEvening shift: 2 pm - 10 pmBack shift (overnights): 10 pm - 6 amSplit shift: 10 am - 6 pm and/or 6 pm - 2 amStrong customer service, critical thinking, and multi-tasking skillsStrong level of integrity and honestyAdvanced computer and typing skillsAbility to handle high levels of stress while maintaining focus and composureAbility to learn and retain information quickly while under stressAbility to take initiative and exercise independent judgementAbility to meet the required physical standards for this positionAbility to pass extensive background process and pre-employment drug and audio screeningsResponsibilitiesReceive and respond to both emergency and non-emergency telephone callsDirect calls to the appropriate authority for dispositionDispatch emergency calls to fire and police responders, or Public Works/Utilities emergency crewsMonitor and transmit all radio communicationsCoordinate emergency requestsEnter information into the Computer Aided Dispatch systemUse OLETS/NCIC to query and enter dataMaintain various logsCall out and notify off-duty personnel, including calling for support resourcesPromotion OpportunitiesPromotion to Emergency Dispatcher II after 2 years of employment with acceptable job performance and completion of required on-the-job trainingPromotion to Shift Supervisor (if available) after 2 years of employment and participation in a competitive selection processPotential to be selected as department trainer (CTO) after 2 years of employment and completion of Communications Training Officer Certification CourseBenefitsGenerous benefits package including health, vision, and dental insuranceAccess to a dedicated primary care medical clinic at no cost to employees and covered dependentsGenerous time off, paid holidays, longevity rewards, and retirement benefitsPaid parental leavePotential for bilingual payA tangible impact to the Emergency Communications Department and residents in the City of EdmondA dynamic and inclusive environment where your contributions are valuedThe City of Edmond is an equal opportunity employer.
